Florida Health Insurance Company

There are many great health insurance companies in the state of Florida. However, just because an insurance company may have a strong A.M. Best rating (signifying strong financial statements and claims paying ability) does not mean that they are the best Florida health insurance company. It is important to understand that this type of financial strength rating does not certify that the insurance company has comprehensive plans, cheap rates, a large network of providers, and good customer service (among other things).

Below is a quick breakdown and ranking of the top individual health insurance companies in the state of Florida. (Note: Individual situations and health insurance needs are very different from one person to the next so the ranking in this list is just a ranking based on general characteristics. In fact, it is often smart to switch health insurance companies every year when your rate increases – so long as you are healthy and you switch to another good FL health insurance company). #1 in Florida: United Healthcare (Golden Rule)

In Florida (and many other states), United Healthcare goes by its individual product line name of Golden Rule. United Healthcare gets the top spot because of its extremely large network of physicians and medical facilities that covers virtually every area of Florida and is nationwide in scope. Golden Rule’s FL health insurance product line is top notch and truly comprehensive coverage. Some of its plans include the Plan 100, the HSA 100, the Copay Plus, and its cheap Saver plan lineup. In a nutshell, Golden Rule United Healthcare is the preeminent individual health insurance provider in Florida.

#2 in Florida: Aetna

Aetna has a very strong group presence in Florida and very recently has emerged with a very strong individual health insurance offering as well. As with UHC; Aetna has a nationwide network and is one of the nations most respected and trustworthy health insurance companies. Some of its plans include the POS 1500, POS 2500, and POS 5000. One potential drawback is that Aetna does not offer maternity benefits with its Florida individual health insurance plans (UHC, Aetna, and BCBS of FL all do). In a nutshell, Aetna is one of the very best individual health insurance companies in Florida.

#3 in Florida: HumanaOne

HumanaOne has introduced very attractive new health insurance plans to Florida residents as of late. Humana is known for having a great preventative benefits package. Some of its plans in FL include the Autograph, Monogram, and Portrait. One potential drawback to HumanaOne is that their network is not near as large as a United Healthcare or an Aetna. In a nutshell, Humana One is one of the very best individual health insurance companies in Florida.

#4 in Florida: Blue Cross Blue Shield of FL

BCBS of FL is a very strong health insurer and has the largest market share of any health benefits company in the state of Florida. Some of the Florida plans available include the BlueOptions plans and the BlueChoice plans. One drawback to members of BCBS of FL is that BCBS of FL is not a nationwide company like a UHC or Aetna. BCBS of FL is an independent licensee of the BCBS trademark and can only offer coverage in the state of FL. This can pose problems for members moving or traveling out of state. Additionally, some of the BC plans, strangely enough; do not offer specialist Doctor office visit copays and do not offer brand name prescription drug copays (almost every other Florida health insurer does). In a nutshell, only consider BCBS of FL for coverage if you cannot get coverage with one of the top 3 companies.

#5 in Florida: Assurant

Fortis Assurant of Florida (sometimes marketed as Time Insurance or John Alden Health Insurance) is an excellent company in terms of financial strength but has 2 major disadvantages: it’s smaller sized Florida network of and the limits in its plans. The Assurant network is much smaller than the large nationwide companies like United Healthcare or Aetna. Assurant’s FL plans also sometimes have calendar year limits and procedure limits: very bad things to have on a health insurance plan and something that neither of the top 4 companies have. One positive for Assurant is they have very loose underwriting standards. In a nutshell, only consider Assurant of FL for coverage if you cannot get coverage with any of the top 4 companies.

#6 in Florida: Avalon Healthcare

Avalon is a very small regional health insurance provider based out of Tampa. Avalon is very new to the FL health insurance market and there is not a lot of data available on their practices. However, Avalon suffers from the same ailment that all small insurance companies face: small networks. Having a small network means that there is a small selection of Doctors for you to choose from and higher prices for you because the smaller insurance companies are not able to negotiate as low of a rate for their members as some of the larger insurance companies that the pull of millions of members on their plans.

#7 in Florida: Continental General (CGI)

Continental has a very good reputation for strong customer service. The major drawback to CGI is that it has a very small network and is a very small regional health insurance company. Like Assurant, CGI has unfavorable limits in its plans that it must sneak into the fine print to compete with some of the bigger more established Florida health insurance companies. In a nutshell, only consider CGI if you cannot get coverage with any of the top 5 companies.

#8 in Florida: United American

United American has a very strong A.M. Best rating for its financial strength. This feature is something that its agents will shout from the hilltops because outside of this it is important to note that their plans do not really cover a whole lot. UA only sells indemnity policies. This means that their plans are NOT comprehensive major medical health insurance plans but rather pay out a “stated benefit” regardless of the cost. (Example: $15,000 medical bill for breaking your leg and if UA has a stated benefit in the plan to pay out up to $500 for any given procedure then you pay the $14,500 out of pocket – not a good position to be in. This problem is magnified if you were to develop a very expensive illness or have to have surgery). United American is great company and its plans are definitely better than not having any health insurance at all. In a nutshell, only consider United American if you have health issues that would prevent you from getting a comprehensive major medical plan and are forced into choosing an indemnity plan because of their (usually) easier underwriting requirements.

Florida Health Insurance WARNING:
Mega Life, UICI, HealthMarkets, Midwest National

According to studies done by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners: Mega Life has a complaint ratio of more than 12 times the FL state average in some years! For more information on Mega Life simply Google their name and you will find that the #2 and #3 results are entries on RipOffReport.com and the #5 entry is on an Attorney referral service website alleging consumer fraud.
