Florida Group Health Insurance

Florida group health insurance can be quite expensive. However, there are quite a few convenient and affordable options for small business owners and the self employed who are residents of Florida. These options range from individual health insurance plans purchased on the open market, health reimbursement arrangements (HRA’s) sometimes known as medical reimbursement plans or even section 125 cafeteria plans, Florida COBRA group continuation health insurance, and others.

The important thing to remember about FL group health insurance is that group health insurance premiums in Florida will be approximately 2-3 times the cost of a similar individual health insurance plan in FL. This is because of the underwriting differences between group plans and individual plans. These underwriting differences are basically the fact that everyone is accepted onto the group plan (that is eligible through their employer) regardless of health history while on an individual plan in the state of Florida – the insurance company gets to pick and choose who they will offer coverage to (unless the applicant qualifies for a Florida guaranteed issue HIPAA plan). So of course, you can see why group is much more expensive than individual – and this is especially true with very small groups (less than 5 employees) and group of one plans (see below). People who cannot get approved for coverage with a Florida individual health plan in the open market are then forced to go the group route because they cannot get turned down due to healthy history (although it is important to note that one can apply for a FL group health insurance plan and still get certain pre-existing conditions not covered for a period of time because of prior continuous creditable coverage limitations in the policy).

In order to purchase a group health insurance plan in the state of Florida then you must have a group that is: 1) Operating as a legitimate business for any purpose other than the sole purpose of obtaining insurance (and the business owners must be able to provide appropriate documentation of this such as tax records or something similar) and 2) The group must have at least 2 full time employees (unless it is the month of August where there is the “Florida group of one sole proprietor” open enrollment period that is mandated by the Florida State Department of Insurance).
